Letter from the Editor

Welcome to the Autumn 2019 edition of the FGDP Yorkshire newsletter.

There has be a bit of change within the committee with Tom Willan stepping down after a fantastic contribution to the division. Hatty Jones is stepping into his role and you can read more about her and all of the committee in this edition.

This year has been a very successful year for the division. We had the Paediatric lecture evening with Rachael Nichol and the annual essay competition had a high number of excellent entries. We are proud to publish the winning entry from Imogen Jones from Sheffield Dental school. Imogen has written an excellent essay on Dentistry in the age of social media. We also received a number of case presentations from dental students within Yorkshire demonstrating some excellent clinical work. We are happy to publish Amanda Chea’s highly commended prosthodontics case presentation.

As a division we endeavour to work closely with Health Education England, Yorkshire and Humber to help dental students transition from dental school to foundation dentistry and then further into their career. To this end we have organised a treatment planning evening for Foundation Dentists to come along and discuss their cases, this will take place on the 7thof November at Horbury Dental Practice. We have been long standing supporters of a prize for the best complex case in foundation dentistry in Yorkshire and this year the prize has gone to Will Dyson-Sutton for his management of a complex wear case.

The division has recently been trying to be more responsive to the needs of our membership. We’ve been moving away from having an annual study day to organising evening CPD events. This started with an evening on oral surgery followed by a paediatric case study evening. We are having a study evening on the Restoration of the Root filled tooth with a restorative consultant and an endodontic specialist from the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital in Sheffield. This event will take place in Sheffield on the 28thof November at the Novotel Hotel and will be an excellent opportunity to discuss this key area of general dentistry with 2 specialists, you can book onto this event via a link in the newsletter. We hope to see you there.

Yours sincerely,

Kenny Strain
